For a franchise that is the joint-most successful team in the Indian Premier League, it is fair to say that unmatched domination and success define the legacy of the Chennai Super Kings. However, an even bigger factor behind the massive fanfare the five-time IPL champions enjoy is MS Dhoni. The World Cup-winning Indian captain has been a part of the CSK family since the inception of the T20 league in 2008. But with the former India skipper now 44 years old, doubts have lingered over his participation in the tournament ahead of IPL 2026. Nevertheless, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan, in his latest interaction, has all but confirmed that the beloved ‘Thala’ of Chennai fans is set to play in the 19th edition of the IPL.

"He is not retiring": CSK CEO confirms the return of MS Dhoni ahead of IPL 2026

For almost half a decade now, it has become a trend to discuss the return of MS Dhoni with the arrival of every new IPL season. Dhoni, who ended his international career as quietly as he could, continues to remain silent about his future plans. Time and again, the veteran has stated that his focus is on maintaining his fitness. If his body allows, the wicketkeeper-batter returns; and when the physical strain begins to interfere with the IPL window, he will bid adieu.

However, his clear statements have rarely put an end to the speculations. MS Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy after Chennai Super Kings secured their fifth IPL title under his leadership in 2023. Ruturaj Gaikwad took charge, while Dhoni continued as the designated wicketkeeper and finisher in the lineup. However, an injury to the young captain during IPL 2025, combined with the team’s poor run, led to Dhoni reclaiming the captaincy. Even then, the fortunes of the five-time champions did not improve, and CSK finished at the bottom of the points table for the first time in the 18-year history of the tournament.

Now, as Chennai Super Kings prepare for a campaign befitting their status as the most successful franchise, discussions are rife over whether the 44-year-old will be part of this comeback. Meanwhile, with the deadline approaching for teams to finalise their retentions for IPL 2026, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has recently spoken about Dhoni’s future.

The update surfaced in a recent video published by Provoke Lifestyle. During the interaction, when two young fans sought clarity on Dhoni’s possible retirement, Viswanath assured them that the 44-year-old legend is not stepping away yet. Moreover, when asked to speak about Dhoni’s retirement plans, “Kasi Mama,” as he is fondly called by CSK fans, said that they should ask Dhoni directly and that he would inform everyone once there is something to convey.

“No, he is not going to retire," Kasi said in the video, and “No, he is not retiring for this (2026) IPL" he added.
