Shubman Gill put all his critics to bed after smashing a sensational double-century against England in the second Test in Birmingham on Thursday. A 203-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the sixth wicket helped his team touch the 400-run mark on Day 2 of the Test. Gill showed grit, patience, and oodles of talent on his way to his maiden double-century in Test cricket. Jadeja got out after playing a solid 89-run knock but there was no stopping Gill.

Stokes tried every tactic he had in his arsenal but it was of no use. Gill drove crisply and pulled with authority to hit most of his boundaries. After Jadeja got out, Washington Sundar joined hands with Shubman Gill and the duo put on a 144-run partnership for the seventh wicket. Shubman Gill went on to register the highest individual Test score by an Indian batter in England. A stunning 269-run knock off 387 balls was laced with 30 fours and three sixes. Previously, Sunil Gavaskar held the record for the highest Test score in England, scoring 221 at The Oval in 1979.

Twitter was abuzz with heart-warming messages for Shubman Gill for his outstanding knock. Meanwhile, an old tweet from Irfan Pathan has also gone viral. In his tweet, Pathan said, "Not just now, we will get to hear Shubman Gill's name even more in the future as well."

"Sirf abhi hi nahi aage or bhi jyada ye naam baar baar sun ne milega"- Irfan Pathan wrote in his tweet.

Gill was just 19 years old back then. Courtesy of Gill’s knock, India have posted a humongous total of 587 runs in the first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal, earlier, had set the tone with an 87-run knock off 107 balls. Indian bowlers bowled a probing spell in the final session, leaving England tottering at 25 for 3. Akash Deep sent the likes of Ben Duckett (0) and Ollie Pope (0) in consecutive deliveries, while Mohammed Siraj bowled a beauty to send Crawley back, who looked good during his 19-run knock off 30 balls.

Joe Root (18 off 37) and Harry Brook (30 off 53), however, calmed things down in the England camp as they stitched an unbeaten 52-run partnership for the fourth wicket. England went back at 77 for 3 at Stumps on Day 2.
