A wave of excitement swept through the cricket community yesterday evening following breaking reports that the Mumbai Indians franchise is contemplating bringing back Rohit Sharma as team captain. However, some reports suggest there is no truth to these speculations about Rohit Sharma returning as captain. Mumbai Indians sources clarified that no discussions regarding the captaincy for the upcoming Indian Premier League season have taken place yet. They acknowledged that the franchise is actively exploring the possibility of trading Hardik Pandya and is continuously evaluating offers. It remains to be seen whether Mumbai and Hardik will actually part ways before IPL 2027 or if they will find common ground again.

Even if Hardik does leave the team, the franchise has several captaincy options available. Rohit Sharma is the most obvious choice, but it is unclear if he would agree to take on the role, especially with his sights set on the 2027 ODI World Cup. Sources further revealed that no suitable deal for Hardik's trade has been found so far. If Hardik leaves the franchise, Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma are the frontrunners for the MI captaincy; Jasprit Bumrah could also be an option.

Under Suryakumar Yadav's captaincy, India won the 2026 T20 World Cup title earlier in the year. However, immediately after the tournament, he lost both the captaincy and his spot in the team. Despite the success achieved under his leadership, Suryakumar was dropped from the squad due to poor batting form. On the other hand, Tilak Varma is a rising star for India and has become a core member of the MI squad; he also serves as the vice-captain of India's T20I team.

Regarding Rohit Sharma's tenure as MI captain, he led the Mumbai Indians to five IPL titles. After Hardik rejoined MI for IPL 2024, the franchise appointed him as captain in place of Rohit—a move that drew significant backlash for both Hardik and the franchise.

Hardik also failed to achieve the desired results for Mumbai Indians as captain; under his leadership, the team finished at the bottom of the IPL 2024 points table. Although MI reached Qualifier 2 in the following season (IPL 2025), they finished in ninth place in IPL 2026, sparking headlines about Hardik potentially leaving the franchise. Only time will tell who will become MI's next captain following Hardik's departure, or if the franchise will decide to appoint Rohit Sharma as captain once again.
