Stephen Fleming was appointed as the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2009, following his retirement as a player from the inaugural IPL season in 2008. Under his coaching tenure, CSK won 5 IPL titles (2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, & 2023) and became one of the successful franchises in IPL history. CSK also featured in 9 IPL finals under his coaching tenure (2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023). Under his coaching tenure, CSK also won two Champions League titles in 2010 & 2014.
However, since the 2023 title campaign, CSK has been constantly struggling in the previous 3 years. The 5-time champions even failed to confirm their spot in the playoffs. Ravindra Jadeja also parted ways with CSK last year, joining Rajasthan Royals. While MS Dhoni’s retirement is also so close. Last year, MS Dhoni didn’t play any match of the tournament due to his injury. He has indicated a couple of times that he probably would not wear a CSK jersey again as a player, due to his age.
Chennai Super Kings owner praised Fleming’s contribution to the franchise’s success. She mentioned the former New Zealand skipper’s incredible 17-year journey.
"Stephen Fleming has been the heartbeat of our coaching unit for almost the entire journey of this franchise. For nearly two decades, he has helped shape our identity, vision, and pursuit of excellence,” said Rupa Gurunath, Owner, Chennai Super Kings.
"On behalf of everyone at the Super Kings franchise, we extend our deepest gratitude for his unwavering commitment, passion, and leadership. While our journey together on the field comes to a close, he will always remain an integral part of the team's legacy," she added.
CSK Managing Director KS Viswanathan recalled how Stephen Fleming defined Chennai Super Kings’ legacy.
"From the earliest days of this journey, Fleming helped define not just how we played, but what we wanted to be as a franchise. He built a culture rooted in consistency, humility, and putting the team first. His ability to understand people and bring out the best from individuals across the team has been one of his greatest strengths,” said KS Viswanathan, Managing Director, Chennai Super Kings.
"His influence extends far beyond the boundary, and we are proud to have shared this remarkable journey together," he added.
After stepping down as head coach, Stephen Fleming also shared his thoughts. He remembered his 17-year journey with Chennai Super Kings.
"Eighteen years is a lifetime in sport, and I leave with nothing but gratitude. My time with Chennai Super Kings has been the privilege of my coaching career. I am proud of everything we have achieved, ” Stephen Fleming said.
"Together, we celebrated unforgettable victories, overcame difficult moments, and built memories that will stay with me forever. CSK will always be close to my heart, and I will be cheering the team on for years to come." he added.
