Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined INR 12 lakh after being found guilty of maintaining a poor over rate during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 match against the Gujarat Titans at New Chandigarh on Tuesday. During the match, the PBKS defeated GT by 3 wickets. However, Iyer, who had an injury scare, was reprimanded by the IPL committee for the offence.

He was fined under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct for a minimum over-rate offence after the first innings stretched to nearly two hours.

“Punjab Kings (PBKS) Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 4 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh,” a statement released by the IPL read.

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 lakhs.”

This is not the first time Iyer has been held responsible for this offence. Last year as well, Iyer was charged with a slow over-rate on two occasions. Iyer has been fined INR 12 lakh for the first breach and INR 24 lakh for the second.

In the match context, Shreyas Iyer invited the Gujarat Titans to bat first. Gujarat Titans scored 162 runs with the loss of 6 wickets in 20 overs. GT Skipper Shubman Gill was the highest scorer for his team, with 39 runs. At the same time, Jos Buttler amassed 38 runs. For PBKS, Vijaykumar Vyashk took 3 wickets, while Yuzvendra Chahal picked 2 wickets.

While chasing a target of 163, PBKS got off to a poor start. Young batsman Priyansh Arya was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the very second over, having scored just 7 runs. From this point on, Prabhsimran Singh and the 'Player of the Match,' Cooper Connolly, staged a comeback for Punjab by adding 76 runs for the second wicket. Prabhsimran Singh eventually lost his wicket to Rashid Khan after scoring 37 runs. Following this, Captain Shreyas Iyer entered the fray; he began scoring runs rapidly, further strengthening Punjab's grip on the match.

However, a brilliant spell by Prasidh Krishna brought the Gujarat Titans right back into the contest. By taking three wickets, he changed Punjab's scorecard from 110/2 to 118/6. Nevertheless, Cooper Connolly stood firm at one end and remained unbeaten until the very end. He played a blistering innings of 72 runs off just 44 balls, featuring 5 fours and 5 sixes.

Punjab Kings next faced Chennai Super Kings on April 03 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, while the Gujarat Titans’ next match will be against the Rajasthan Royals on April 04 at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
