IPL 2026: All you need to know about the Punjab Kings controversy
The past few days have been quite challenging for the Punjab Kings team. At one point, having won 6 of their first 7 matches, the team was sitting at the top of the table; however, they have faced defeat in their last 4 encounters, a slump that has now left them facing the looming threat of being knocked out of the playoffs. Apart from this, the Punjab Kings frequently find themselves in the spotlight due to their activity on Twitter; recently, the team issued a strong statement regarding this matter via their official Twitter handle.
This statement comes amidst growing speculation on social media concerning the franchise and some of its players. Although PBKS did not directly address these rumors, they utilized an official post on their social media handle to make a fervent appeal to the public to refrain from spreading misinformation. Subsequently, the franchise took down the statement and reposted it with certain modifications—a move they appear to have made to avoid further controversy.
In fact, the start of the tournament had been nothing short of a dream run for Punjab. The team remained unbeaten in its first seven matches, winning six of them, while one match ended in a no-result due to rain. Their aggressive brand of cricket and consistently stellar performances had established them as one of the premier teams of the season. However, the team's journey has become somewhat arduous over the past few weeks. Four consecutive defeats have placed Punjab in a precarious position within the playoff race, thereby intensifying the pressure on the team as the tournament enters its decisive phase.
As long as the team was winning, fans of opposing teams remained silent regarding their tweets; however, the moment the team began losing matches, fans swarmed them and started trolling the team relentlessly.
Currently, the PBKS team is not only struggling on the field but is also facing criticism off the field. Star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal recently made headlines when a video surfaced online allegedly showing him vaping on a flight. Additionally, ongoing discussions on social media regarding opener Prabhsimran Singh's fitness—and his reportedly increased weight—have sparked a debate among fans. Amidst this uproar surrounding the franchise, PBKS issued a statement appealing to the public—and specifically to 'sports journalists'—to stop spreading misinformation.
"Criticism, banter, and opinions are part of sport. Fake stories and made-up narratives for cheap engagement are not. We urge everyone, especially “sports journalists", to verify facts before spreading misinformation for attention or traction," PBKS posted on X earlier.
However, they subsequently deleted this post and reposted it; this time, they removed the reference to "sports journalists" from the post to avoid further controversy on social media.
"Criticism, banter, and opinions are part of sport. Fake stories and made-up narratives for cheap engagement are not. We urge everyone to verify facts before spreading misinformation for attention or traction," the updated post read.

Punjab Kings co-owner Preity Zinta also reacted to the franchise's original statement (which was subsequently deleted). She strongly condemned the deliberate dissemination of misinformation with the intent of damaging the reputation of individuals and the team.
"There’s a difference between criticism & calculated misinformation. Healthy debate around the game is welcome, but the deliberate spread of fake narratives to damage individuals, the team, or the brand should not & will not be taken lightly. I urge everyone — including verified voices & media professionals — to exercise responsibility before amplifying unverified information. Thank you," Zinta wrote on X.

Meanwhile, PBKS currently sits in fourth place on the points table with 13 points and remains firmly in contention for a spot in the playoffs. Winning their next two matches would secure their place in the playoffs for the second consecutive season, but this will not be easy. The team is scheduled to face the Mumbai Indians, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and the Lucknow Super Giants in their upcoming cricket matches. The Punjab Kings were the runners-up last season, and this season, they will be determined to win the title at all costs. Judging by their performance in the initial matches, it seemed as though they would fulfil their dream of winning the title this time around; however, following the last four matches, Punjab will have to work extremely hard to secure the title—otherwise, their wait will only be prolonged further.
