IPL 2026: 3 reasons why CSK lost against RCB
The 5-time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, have suffered a 3rd straight defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2026. They lost the 11th match of the tournament against the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru by 43 runs at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on Sunday. The fans witnessed a one-sided contest, where RCB secured a convincing victory over CSK. RCB amassed 250 runs with a loss of 3 wickets in 20 overs. Tim David scored 70 runs off 25 balls, including 3 fours and 8 sixes. While Devdutt Padikkal also scored 50 runs in 29 balls. Apart from both, skipper Rajat Patidar played a wonderful knock of 48 runs in just 19 balls, including a four and 6 sixes. The RCB batters hit 19 sixes during the innings.
While chasing 251, CSK were bowled out on 207 runs in 19.4 overs. This is CSK’s 3rd stargight loss of the tournament. Ahead of this, they have lost against the Rajasthan Royals and the Punjab Kings. They are currently at the bottom of the points table and still waiting for the season’s first victory.
During the match, only one or two things went positively for CSK, while RCB's dominance was evident throughout the game. In this article, we will examine the reasons behind CSK's defeat.
1. Bowling & fielding failures strike again
Once again, CSK's bowling and fielding appeared thoroughly ordinary against RCB. Barring the initial three overs, RCB kept CSK's bowlers and fielders under relentless pressure. Except for Khaleel Ahmed (9.20), every single CSK bowler recorded an economy rate of 12 or higher. In the final five overs, Rajat Patidar and Tim David absolutely dismantled the CSK bowlers, smashing a staggering 97 runs. Consequently, RCB—which otherwise might have been restricted to a total in the 210–220 range—ended up breaching the 250-run mark.
In the 18th over of the innings, Anshul Kamboj bowled Tim David out; however, the delivery turned out to be a no-ball. Following this, in the 19th over, David amassed 30 runs—including four sixes and a four—propelling RCB to a formidable total. Furthermore, CSK's fielding performance was also quite poor.
2. Early collapse sets the match result
To chase down a mammoth target of 251 runs, any team requires a strong start from its openers; however, Chennai Super Kings' top order once again returned to the pavilion within the Powerplay itself. Within just three overs, Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (7 off 3), Sanju Samson (9 off 5), and Ayush Mhatre (1 off 3) had all made their way back to the pavilion. In all three matches played so far, Gaikwad and Samson have failed miserably, putting CSK under pressure right from the outset.
From this early collapse, chasing down 251 runs is never easy, and Sarfaraz Khan (50 off 25), Prashant Veer (43 off 29), and Jamie Overton (37 off 16) could only succeed in reducing the margin of defeat.
3. Team selection and poor captaincy
During the match, CSK's playing XI once again became a topic of discussion. The team fielded only three overseas players, despite having options such as Akeal Hosein and Spencer Johnson. Furthermore, it remains baffling why the team has not yet included players like Shreyas Gopal, Mukesh Choudhary, and Urvil Patel in the CSK playing XI. Additionally, the constant pressure of captaincy is visibly weighing on Ruturaj Gaikwad, and its impact is evident in his batting performance. Gaikwad appeared to have no plan whatsoever to stop the opposition batters. The team is currently missing its leader, MS Dhoni, and devastating middle-order batter Dewald Brevis, both of whom are currently missing matches due to injury.
