Indian Test captain Shubman Gill’s sensational run in the ongoing England series has not come as a surprise to his childhood coach, Sukhwinder Tinku. The 25-year-old has hit peak form since taking over the Test leadership, racking up two centuries and a double hundred in his first two matches as skipper. Tinku lauded Gill’s maturity, calmness under pressure, and sharp cricketing intellect, traits he said have been evident since the youngster’s early days in Mohali. Gill’s monumental performance at Edgbaston not only guided India to a commanding position in the second Test but also saw him etch his name into the record books.

He broke the legendary Sunil Gavaskar’s 53-year-old record for the most runs by an Indian in a single Test match. Gavaskar had scored 344 runs against the West Indies in 1971; Gill went past that with a remarkable tally of 430 runs. His twin centuries in both innings also made him just the eighth Indian to achieve that rare feat, and only the third Indian captain to do so. As the series progresses, Gill’s composure, tactical awareness, and hunger for runs continue to impress fans and cricketing legends alike, solidifying his status as the new face of Indian Test cricket.

“Shubman is just getting started. He’ll make more records. His technique is his greatest strength. Even as a youngster, he understood the game deeply and played with remarkable composure,”  stated Shubman Gill's childhood coach Sukhwinder Tinku.

Shubman Gill continues to rewrite record books with his phenomenal batting form in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025. With 585 runs already in the series, he now sits third on the list of Indian batters with the most Test runs in a single series against England. He is just behind Rahul Dravid, who scored 602 in 2002, and Virat Kohli, who made 592 in 2018. With three matches still to go, Gill is in prime position to surpass both and set a new benchmark.

The 25-year-old from Fazilka is also on track to challenge one of cricket’s most iconic records — Sir Donald Bradman’s 974 runs in a single Test series, set during the 1930 Ashes. Bradman amassed that tally in just seven innings at an average of 139.14, a feat that has stood untouched for nearly a century.

Meanwhile, in the ongoing second Test at Edgbaston, England face a daunting task. They require 536 runs on the final day to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. At stumps on Day 4, Harry Brook (15*) and Ollie Pope (24*) were battling to keep England in the game. India, needing just seven more wickets, will rely on pacers Akash Deep and Mohammed Siraj, who have already struck key blows.
