India vs England: India claims its first-ever Test win at Edgbaston
EDGBASTON CURSE ENDS! Team India have scripted history registering their first-ever Test win over England at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Sunday. The Shubman Gill era has officially started its winning spree with a superb 336-run victory in the second Test match. Indian captain led his team from the front, smashing a brilliant double hundred in the first innings and a century in the second innings while pace bowler Akash Deep also claimed an amazing 10-wicket match haul. India have now levelled the five-match Test series by 1-1 margin ahead of the iconic Lord's Test match set to begin from July 10, 2025.
India vs England: Shubman Gill, Akash Deep help India create history in Birmingham
Just like Headingley, India were asked to bat first in the second Test after England captain Ben Stokes won the toss and elected to bowl. However, the visitors negated the challenge really well as their in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal played a brilliant knock of 87 runs that included a total of 13 boundaries. India were in a spot of bother losing two quick middle-order wickets after which the pair of Indian captain Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja added an exceptional partnership of 203 runs to lead a solid fightback.
However, it was Shubman who dominated the proceedings having achieved his best cricket score of 269 runs that consisted of 30 fours and 3 sixes to help India post a mammoth total if 587 runs on the scoreboard. Jadeja too played an impressive innings of 89 runs to support his skipper. In reply, things started off poorly for hosts England as they were reduced to 84 for 5 within 22 overs.
Then, it was the duo of Harry Brook and Jamie Smith who frustrated the Indian bowlers with a staggering partnership of 303 runs for the sixth wicket. Brook played a wonderful innings of 158 runs before getting dismissed by Akash Deep. England were bowled out for 407 runs in the first innings as Smith remained unbeaten at 184 runs that consisted of 21 fours and 4 sixes. For India, speedster Mohammed Siraj claimed an excellent six-wicket haul while Akash also picked up four crucial wickets.
With a first innings lead of 180 runs, India once again came out with a pretty dominating mindset in the second innings as KL Rahul notched up a fine half-century. Indian captain Shubman Gill continued his stellar run in this India vs England Test series with another heroic knock of 161 runs. The duo of Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja too registered half-centuries each as India declared their second innings at 427 for 6, setting a massive fourth-innings target of 608 runs for England.
The Indian bowlers led by Akash Deep were once again hitting the nail brilliantly well in the fourth innings to rattle the England batters, taking crucial wickets at regular intervals. The England team were definitely found wanting on Day 5 of the IND vs ENG 2nd Test match. Jamie Smith once again showed some sort of fight with a fantastic knock of 88 runs, but England folded for 271 runs as Akash Deep took six wickets and picked up his first 10-wicket match haul in Test cricket.
