India squad announced for the Asia Cup 2025
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially announced the India squad for the upcoming edition of Asia Cup 2025. The T20I tournament is scheduled to begin from September 9, 2025 and the final will be taking place on September 28 with Dubai and Abu Dhabi as the two venues. Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the captain while Shubman Gill will be his deputy. A total of eight teams will be participating in the Asia Cup 2025, India, Pakistan, Oman and United Arab Emirates (UAE) part of Group A while Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh form the Group B.
No place for Shreyas Iyer in the India squad for Asia Cup 2025
The likes of Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Prasidh Krishna have been named as the reserve players. However, the massive breaking news is the omission of Shreyas Iyer from the India squad for the forthcoming edition of the Asia Cup 2025. In the recently concluded edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) season, the Shreyas-led Punjab Kings (PBKS) ended as the runners-up where the right-hander notched up an amazing total of 604 runs from 17 matches. With the likes of Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, Shubman Gill and Tilak Varma part of the side, it will be a massive task for captain Suryakumar Yadav to pick India's top three batters.
"It's very unfortunate for Yashasvi Jaiswal, with Abhishek doing well, he can bowl as well - one of the two was going to miss out - same with Shreyas, not his fault," stated chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
"With respect to Shreyas Iyer, who can he replace? It's no fault of his, but neither ours," he added.
The Ajit Agarkar-led National Selection Committee have picked Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh in the middle-order. On the other hand, Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two wicket-keepers in the 15-member squad. Suryakumar, Hardik and one of Dube or Rinku will definitely be part of the India playing XI in the upcoming matches of the Asia Cup 2025.
The national selectors have included as many as three spinners in the Asia Cup squad, Axar Patel, Varun Chakaravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav. The pace bowling department includes the duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh alongside seam bowling all-rounders like Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube. It will be really interesting to see who gets the final nod in the India playing XI for the upcoming T20I competition.
India will be playing their first match in the Asia Cup 2025 against United Arab Emirates on September 10 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai. However, the much-awaited India vs Pakistan match is scheduled to be played at the very same venue on September 14.
