IND vs SL: Ravichandran Ashwin backs Yashasvi Jaiswal for a strong comeback
India’s young Talented opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has been struggling with his batting in recent days, and this struggle continued during the first Test against Sri Lanka. He looked quite promising in the first innings and had reached 32 runs, but unfortunately, he was run out following a mix-up with KL Rahul. In the second innings, however, Jaiswal failed to even open his account. While there is no doubt about Jaiswal's talent, his bat has been quiet of late.
Former Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on Jaiswal's form, discussing what the youngster needs to do to rediscover his touch. He acknowledged that Jaiswal was unlucky in the first innings but noted that the duck he registered in the second innings is something he needs to reflect on and work on.
“KL Rahul continued his form, he came in to bat after cramps but could not get his hundred, but I think it was fantastic from him. Yashasvi Jaiswal was unlucky in the first innings, and the way he got out, he can relook that, that second-innings dismissal of his. He is a very, very good player, but his recent form has not supported him," Ashwin said.
Ravichandran Ashwin further remarked that Jaiswal's current form does not do justice to his talent level. He added that Jaiswal possesses the capability to turn things around with the right mindset and concentration.
"I think clarity of mind is really important for Yashasvi, and I really hope he can come back to that, concentrate well on his batting, and score a big one. Despite having so much talent, he is going through this phase; anybody can go through this phase, but for Yashasvi, I am waiting for him to score runs," Ashwin stated.
Yashasvi Jaiswal has managed to score only 358 runs across his last 10 innings—including 1 century and 1 half-century—which has become a cause for concern for Team India. The last time he crossed the 50-run mark was against South Africa, where he scored 58 runs. His last 10 innings cricket scores were 0,32,24,13,58,0,12,8,175,and 36.
India is currently leading the 2-match test series 1-0. The second test will take place at SSC, Colombo, on August 23-27. Shubman Gill & co. are now eyeing a clean sweep, while the hosts want to make a bounceback in the upcoming test.
