IND vs SA: Suresh Raina comes in support of Gautam Gambhir
Suresh Raina stepped forward to support his former teammate Gautam Gambhir, who has come under intense criticism following India’s disappointing performances in the ongoing Test series against South Africa. With pressure mounting on Gambhir in his role within the team management, Raina emphasized that it is unfair to hold him solely responsible for the recent setbacks. He reminded fans and critics that Gambhir has consistently put in immense effort and has already played a crucial role in guiding India to significant successes earlier in the year.
IND vs SA: Gautam Gambhir deserves to be blamed?
Raina pointed out that under Gambhir’s guidance, India secured major victories in tournaments such as the Champions Trophy and the Asia Cup, achievements that reflect his strong leadership and commitment. He stressed that while a coach can provide direction, strategy, and motivation, the ultimate responsibility lies with the players on the field. According to Raina, it is the players who must step up, work harder, and execute their roles with discipline and focus. A coach can only offer advice and support, but it is the performance and determination of the team members that determine outcomes. Raina’s remarks called for patience and understanding, urging supporters to acknowledge Gambhir’s contributions and give the team the space needed to regroup.
"Gauti bhaiya (Gautam Gambhir) has worked really hard and he is not at all at fault. The players have to work really hard and play well. Under him we have been doing great in the white-ball format where we just won the ICC Champions Trophy and Asia Cup in Dubai earlier this year," stated former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina.
“The players have to score, the coach can only guide, advise and give support to the players," he added.
During Gautam Gambhir’s stint as head coach, India endured a difficult phase, including a 3-0 whitewash at home against New Zealand last year, a rare and disappointing outcome for a team known for its dominance on home soil. That series raised questions about the team’s preparedness and execution, and the scrutiny has only intensified since then.
Now, India once again finds itself in a precarious position, this time against South Africa. With their performances faltering in the ongoing series, the team is on the verge of suffering its first home Test series defeat to the Proteas in 25 years. Such a setback would mark a significant moment, highlighting deeper issues within the squad that extend beyond coaching strategies. The possibility of this historic loss has amplified discussions around player accountability, team balance, and the need for stronger on-field application. It also underscores the challenges Gambhir faces as he works to rebuild confidence and consistency within the side.
“If they (the players) are facing any issues, they must be communicating to the coach that this is the issue. If the players do well then the coach will be also applauded. But if the team is not doing well, it should not be that the coach should be sacked from his post," Raina further mentioned.
