India kicked off their New Zealand tour with a thrilling four-wicket victory over the hosts in the first T20I at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch, successfully chasing down a massive target of 226 thanks to brilliant innings from Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, and Naman Dhir. This is India’s highest chase in T20I history. Shreyas Iyer and co. demonstrated exactly why they are reigning two-time World T20 champions.

Chasing a target of 226, Team India got off to a blistering start thanks to Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who stitched together 93 runs for the opening wicket in just 6 overs. However, Abhishek Sharma (29) was dismissed by Michael Bracewell on the final ball of the powerplay.

Following this, the hosts' captain, Mitchell Santner, and Michael Bracewell spun a web, slowing down the scoring rate while claiming 4 wickets. Sanju Samson (68) was eventually bowled by Mitchell Santner. Meanwhile, the tactical shuffle in the batting order—moving Ishan Kishan and Tilak Varma—did not pay off, as both lost their wickets while attempting big shots.

At this juncture, captain Shreyas Iyer (42) and Axar Patel steadied the ship, putting together a 45-run partnership for the fifth wicket to bring India back into the contest. Axar Patel contributed 24 runs before falling to Lockie Ferguson. Naman Dhir, who came in next, played an explosive knock—an unbeaten 42 off just 15 balls—to steer India to victory. For New Zealand, Michael Bracewell and Mitchell Santner claimed two wickets each, while Adam Milne and Lockie Ferguson took one wicket apiece. Sanju Samson was named Player of the Match for his brilliant half-century.

Earlier, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and invited New Zealand to bat first. Openers Tim Seifert (25) and Finn Allen (45) provided a strong start for New Zealand, putting together 49 runs for the first wicket. This partnership was broken when Mayank Yadav dismissed Tim Seifert. Daryl Mitchell, who came in next, kept the scoring rate high by playing a series of shots, contributing 28 runs. Meanwhile, Axar Patel dismissed Finn Allen, but Glenn Phillips—batting at number four—played an unbeaten knock of 82 runs off 40 balls, helping New Zealand reach a substantial total. In the middle overs, Devon Jacobs played an explosive innings, scoring 31 runs off just 16 balls and providing excellent support to Phillips. For India, Arshdeep Singh, Mayank Yadav, and Axar Patel each took one wicket. However, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, making his return to international cricket after four years, went wicketless and conceded 49 runs in his four overs.

With this victory, Team India has taken a 1-0 lead in the series. The second match of the series will be played at the same venue on Saturday, October 24.
