IND vs ENG: Shresta Iyer comes up with a huge revelation on her brother Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy
The Indian team is yet to win a game under Shreyas Iyer’s leadership. The Men in Blue first lost the T20I series against Ireland and are still winless against England in the first three games. Every critic is currently raising questions about his leadership skills and also his batting performance. Since taking over India’s T20I captaincy, he has scored only 123 runs in 5 innings at an average of 24.60, including a half-century.
However, his sister, Shresta Iyer, came down to support his brother. She urged fans that her brother needs some more time to evaluate as the best captain, and also ensured that the time will definitely come. She also spoke about how fans should not just evaluate Iyer’s captaincy based on results but also on the conditions.
"People see the success today, but very few know what it took to get here. Very few know the sacrifices, the struggles, the disappointments, and the battles you fought quietly within yourself," she said.
"Wait and watch. I know he has that in him. Things don't work in your favour every time. It's easy for us to comment that he's losing as a captain. Cricket is way beyond that," she commented.
"You don't know how the pitch is, if it's a bowling or a batting pitch, if he won or lost the toss. You're only looking at his captaincy. See the matches that he won as a captain."
She also mentioned that the greatest captains of India, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and great Sachin Tendulkar, also faced this lean phase in their captaincy eras. She showed faith in her brother and said that time will change very soon.
"When you represent India, there are a lot of things that come with it. It's not just a good or bad captain. All the captains so far, may it be Shubman Gill, the legends Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Sachin Tendulkar - they have also lost many matches," she said.
"If you only point out to Shreyas, maybe you have a problem with him. He is a very different personality overall, and he has a lot to give. And that time will come very soon."
Shreyas Iyer is currently leading the T20I side in England. Indian team is currently trailing the ongoing series 0-2 after 3 matches. The Men in Blue will have to win the remaining matches of the series to avoid another series defeat. The fourth T20I will be played at County Ground, Bristol on July 9, while the final T20I will be held at Southampton on July 11. Iyer will remain in England to join the 3-match ODI series as well, starting from July 14. He is serving as the vice-captain of the 50-over side.
