IND vs ENG: Aakash Chopra reacts to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s omission from India’s ODI squad
India’s ODI squad for the England tour has been announced. While players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, and Axar Patel have secured spots, Yashasvi Jaiswal was not selected—despite having led India to victory with an unbeaten century against Afghanistan just a day prior.
Cricketers have expressed mixed reactions regarding Yashasvi's omission. Former cricketer Aakash Chopra voiced his disappointment, noting that Jaiswal has performed brilliantly in every opportunity he has received so far, yet failed to make the cut. Jaiswal will not be part of the squad touring England for the ODI series; the question now arises as to what he must do to prove himself.
Chopra believes that Ishan Kishan receives preferential treatment because he can fulfil multiple roles—serving as a wicketkeeper, a backup middle-order batter, or a backup opener, and batting at any position. He is the kind of batter who can fit in anywhere.
“You've got to feel for Yashasvi Jaiswal. He has played very few matches and has scored two centuries. He scored a century in the last match against South Africa and was dropped for the next series. He scored a century in the last match against Afghanistan now and has been dropped for the next series," Chopra said.
"What more can I do? He will ask that question of himself for sure, but this is what it is. Shubman Gill is there with Rohit Sharma. Ishan Kishan provides you with multiple options. He is a keeper, backup middle order, and backup opener as well. He is one guy who fits everywhere. However, you have got to feel for Yashasvi. He is scoring runs, but his name is still not coming," he added.
In the recently concluded Afghanistan series, both Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan got the opportunity to bat in two innings each. Ishan Kishan scored 159 runs across his two innings—including a knock of 125 off 77 balls in the second ODI—while Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 114 runs in his two innings, featuring an innings of 110 off 86 balls in the final ODI.
India is set to tour England for a five-match T20I series running from July 1 to July 11. Following this, the two teams will play three ODIs on July 14, July 16, and July 19.
