IND vs ENG: 5 reasons why India lost the T20I series
The England tour is going from bad to Worse. The Indian team lost the 4th T20I match against England by 9 wickets at Bristol. With this, England won the series as well. This is the second straight defeat for the Men in Blue. Firstly, India lost the 2-match series against minnow Ireland, and now they have lost the series against England. The men in blue have yet to win a single match of the UK tour. Under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, Team India is facing the Worst phase of their cricketing history. The Critics are continually slamming the team management for their calls and decisions made after the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. In this article, we’re going to analyse the 5 reasons the Indian team faced two consecutive series defeats.
1. Overconfidence harmed the World Champions
During both series, Indian batters played a similar brand of cricket, which they played before the World Cup 2026, or Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy tenure, without evaluating the conditions and match situations. England & Ireland pitches were totally different from India’s conditions; despite this, Indian batters played risky shots and threw away their wickets.
2. Team selection, unusual changes in T20I setup
This is the second time that, under Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure, Indian team management dropped the winning World Cup captain and appointed a new captain. BCCI removed former T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav and appointed Shreyas Iyer as the new captain. Suryakumar Yadav was struggling with his batting form, but the Indian team continusally winning the matches, series, tournaments and also the World Cup. But now, the Indian team are struggling to win a single match.
It would have been better for Team India to stick with the existing setup before trying to build a new team, and to make changes only if results weren't forthcoming; instead, the management made unnecessary alterations that completely changed the team structure, which is now hurting the team.
3. Poor Bowling & fielding cost both series
During both series, Indian bowling and fielding were very poor. Bowlers were not able to hit the right areas. They couldn’t even read their opposition, who were continually troubling the Indian batters. Indian bowlers gave so many extras, which is one of the reasons for India’s defeat against England. So far, Indian bowlers have conceded 30 extras (11 in 2nd T20I, 6 in 3rd T20I, and 13 in 4th T20I). On the other side, English bowlers conceded only 14 extras. Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, and Harshit Rana are constantly going very expensive, and they have also not been picking wickets in the crucial moments. Apart from that, Indian fielding has also been very ordinary. Fielders have dropped a couple of catches, while they are also struggling in ground fielding as well.
4. Unnecessary shot selection by batters
Indian batters’ poor form also became a major concern in these two series. They all get starts, but didn’t convert them into a big cricket score, causing the Indian team to neither chase the target nor set a big total while batting first. For India, skipper Shreyas Iyer and Abhishek Sharma were the top scorers. Iyer has scored 190 runs in this ongoing series, including 2 half-centuries, while Abhishek Sharma has 128 runs, including 1 fifty. Apart from them, all the other batters were constantly struggling. In 4 innings so far, Shivam Dube has 71 runs, Ishan Kishan has 66 runs, Tilak Varma has 51 runs, and Axar Patel has 15 runs, while Vaibhav Sooryavnshi has 42 runs in 3 matches. Previously, Sanju Samson had scored only 6 runs in 3 games, which caused him to be dropped from the India playing XI.
5. Captaincy’s failure to adapt to the conditions properly
It wouldn’t be wrong to say that Indian captain Shreyas Iyer was under total pressure in these two series, especially in the ongoing England series. They lost the series against Ireland 0-2, where no one expected that India would lose the series. And now in England, the same story continues. Indian skipper failed to adapt to the conditions and tried new tactics during the match. After Virat Kohli’s retirement, the Indian team is still struggling in the chase, and the Indian team has continually opted to bowl first, and every time the Indian team has failed.
