Indian batters took the Afghanistan bowlers to the cleaners, raining down fours and sixes at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. Invited to bat first, Team India posted a massive total of 402 in 49.5 overs, powered by captain Shubman Gill’s 9th ODI century and Ishan Kishan’s second. In ODI cricket history, the Indian team crossed 8th time 400-mark. Gill scored 154 runs off 110 balls at a strike rate of 123.08, hitting 22 fours and 2 sixes.

During the massive innings, Gill also became the fastest Indian player to score 3000 ODI runs. On the other hand, Kishan scored 125 runs off 79 balls at a strike rate of 140, including 14 fours and 7 sixes. The duo shared a 224-run partnership for the third wicket, laying the foundation for India's imposing total. Apart from them, former captain Rohit Sharma scored 48 runs.

When Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan were batting, it seemed as though India might even touch the 450-run mark; however, once the two were dismissed, the Indian batting lineup collapsed like a house of cards. India lost their last eight wickets for just 82 runs and failed to bat out the full 50 overs. Nangeyalia Kharoti became the highest wicket-taker with four wickets, while Rashid Khan took three; Allah Ghazanfar and Mohammed Saleem Saifi picked up one wicket each.

The Indian team entered this match with three changes. Prince Yadav got the chance to make his ODI debut, while Yashasvi Jaiswal and Kuldeep Yadav were included in the playing XI. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed in the second over after scoring just 4 runs; he was sent back by Saleem Saifi. Subsequently, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill—who came in to bat at number three—shared an 87-run partnership for the second wicket. Rohit was unlucky, getting bowled by Rashid Khan just two runs shy of a half-century.
