This will be the first occasion when India and Afghanistan will face each other in an ODI series. Before this, both teams had played 1 T20I series in 2024, which India won by 3-0, and 1 test in 2018, which India also won. Generally, both teams faced each other in the ICC and ACC tournaments. Last time, both teams faced each other in an ODI match during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, where the Indian team defeated Afghanistan.
India is currently making attempts to play as many ODI matches as possible before going into the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. With this series, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will once again feature in the blue jersey. Shubman Gill will lead both the test and ODI sides. The Indian team is currently busy in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, in which the Indian team has successfully qualified for the semi-finals, where they will face England on March 5 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
