"I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice"- Wasim Jaffer weighs in on Test captaincy debate

There has been a constant debate about India’s preferred captaincy choice in Test cricket between Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer recently shared his views on the same, picking Jasprit Bumrah as the ‘automatic captaincy choice’. According to Jaffer, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is a straightforward choice to be the Test captain, with Shubman Gill as his deputy. Jaffer reckons that unless Bumrah doesn’t need the captaincy, he becomes an automatic choice for the role. 

He further stated that Gill can step in as captain whenever Jasprit Bumrah needs rest. This way, Gill could be groomed for the future, and he would be more focused on his batting. 

“I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice, unless he doesn't want the responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC - stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest. This way Gill could also be groomed without the pressure of being the full time captain.” Jaffer's tweet read.

Jaffer is known for his knowledgeable and insightful cricket analysis, especially on social media. His recent tweet on the Gill-Bumrah captaincy debate is also well-reasoned.

Legendary Test spinner, Ravi Ashwin had also voiced his opinion on the same. In line with Jaffer’s viewpoint, Ashwin expressed his displeasure at handing over the captaincy to Gill and, instead, backed the likes of Bumrah and Jadeja to take on the role. 

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin endorsed Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja for the role. He was of the opinion that Gill should be groomed for a couple of years under an experienced skipper before giving him the captaincy duty.  

“First of all, everyone is saying that Gill is the captain. Everyone is going in that direction. But there is a loud option in Jasprit Bumrah, and why do we forget about Ravindra Jadeja?" Ashwin said. 

“If you are willing to go for a new person as captain, I would say why not make him an understudy of an experienced guy for two years before handing him the job on a full-time basis," he added.
