How can PBKS qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs? Check complete qualification scenarios
The Punjab Kings—the last edition runners-up, halfway through the IPL 2026 season, were riding high and completely undefeated after winning 6 of their first 7 matches, and were at the forefront of the race to secure a playoff spot—suddenly find themselves facing the looming threat of elimination following the 55th match. The team has lost their last 4 consecutive matches, slipping from the No. 1 spot down to the 4th position. A team that once boasted 13 points after just 7 matches remains stuck at that exact same tally even after 11 games, and now, if circumstances do not change, the team could very well be knocked out of the playoff race entirely.
Shreyas Iyer & Co. have suffered defeats in their last four matches—against the Rajasthan Royals, Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Delhi Capitals—which have diminished the team's chances of reaching the playoffs. In the recent contest against DC, the Punjab Kings suffered a 3-wicket defeat. In this match, PBKS scored 210/5 after being invited to bat first by DC skipper Axar Patel. For PBKS, Priyansh Arya (56 off 33) and skipper Shreyas Iyer (59 off 36) amassed half-centuries. In response, DC had a poor start, losing their initial four wickets on 74 in 8.2 overs. However, DC managed a phenomenal recovery thanks to half-centuries from David Miller (51 off 28) and Axar Patel (56 off 30). Ultimately, Auqib Nabi, Madhav Tiwari, and Ashutosh Sharma finished the winning line for DC with significant efforts.
While it remains possible for the team to not only qualify for the playoffs but also secure a top-two finish, they must now win all their remaining matches to do so.
PBKS upcoming matches
Vs MI on May 14, Dharamsala
Vs RCB on May 17, Dharamsala
Vs LSG on May 23, Lucknow
The Punjab Kings will face the Mumbai Indians in their next cricket match on May 14. However, this encounter will be anything but easy. The five-time champions, the Mumbai Indians, have already been eliminated from the playoff race, and they could very well play spoilsport for the Punjab Kings. Subsequently, Punjab will take on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 17 and the Lucknow Super Giants on May 23; however, these matches, too, are unlikely to be easy.
PBKS IPL 2026 playoffs scenarios
If PBKS win all 3 matches
If Punjab Kings win all three of their remaining matches, the team will not only successfully qualify for the playoffs with 19 points but could also secure a spot in the top two.
If PBKS win 2 matches
If PBKS win two of their next three matches, the team will qualify for the playoffs with 17 points. However, with 17 points, their chances of finishing in the top two would be slim, and the team might have to play in the Eliminator.
If PBKS win 1 match
If Shreyas Iyer & Co. manage to win only one of their remaining three matches, the team will finish the league stage with 15 points. Given the current scenario, qualifying with 15 points might not be easy. If PBKS indeed finishes the league stage on 15 points, they will have to hope that Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings lose two of their next three matches and fail to surpass the 14-point mark. Alternatively, they would need at least two of the teams currently occupying the top three spots in the points table (RCB, SRH, and GT) to lose all of their remaining matches. In such a scenario, PBKS would qualify with 15 points.
If PBKS lose all 3 matches
If Punjab loses all three of their remaining matches, they will be knocked out of the IPL 2026 playoff race.
