The IPL 2026 is almost halfway through, and all 10 teams are slowly beginning to contend for the playoffs. So far, PBKS, RCB, and RR are looking like the favourites for playoff contenders, while SRH, DC, GT, and now CSK are also involved in the huddle of the race. However, the Mumbai Indians, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Lucknow Super Giants are presently at the bottom of the table and have virtually a slim chance of making the playoffs. However, nothing is impossible in the Indian Premier League; all predictions fail there.

The IPL 2026 is slowly becoming a nightmare for the 5-time IPL champions, the Mumbai Indians. They have only won two of the tournament's seven games thus far. They presently hold 8th place in the points table with just four points. Recently, they lost their 7th league match against their arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings by 104 runs in match No. 33 of the IPL 2026. With this loss, they lost their 5th league match of the tournament. Following this, their chances of making the playoffs have diminished even further.

Although the Mumbai Indians team can still qualify for the playoffs, generally, winning 8 matches is sufficient to secure a spot in the playoffs. Winning 9 matches significantly increases the chances of finishing in the top two. The Mumbai Indians have already lost 5 matches so far; from this point onward, even a single defeat could jeopardise their chances of securing a top-tier qualification spot, while losing 2 or 3 matches could effectively extinguish their playoff hopes entirely.

MI need to win at least 6 matches to reach the playoffs

For Hardik Pandya and his team, every match from here is a do-or-die encounter, and they must win every remaining game to keep their playoff aspirations alive. This is not the first time the Mumbai Indians have found themselves in such a predicament; in fact, their campaign follows a similar trajectory in almost every season. The Mumbai Indians faced this exact situation during the 2015 IPL as well—a season in which they staged a remarkable comeback from this very position to ultimately clinch the title.

The MI will have to replicate their 2015 season comeback in this season as well. They will have to win at least 6 of 7 matches to keep their playoff hopes alive; otherwise, MI’s dream of winning the 6th title in this edition will be diminished soon. The Mumbai Indians will play against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next cricket match on April 29. MI has world-class players in every department. Despite this, they have reached on this situation. They will need to consider how they might overcome this circumstance in the current season.
