Under Shubman Gill's leadership, the Indian team defeated hosts Sri Lanka by 165 runs in the first test match at Galle on Wednesday. With this victory, Team India has returned to winning ways in the ongoing 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. India had won their last match of the current WTC cycle against the West Indies last year, but subsequently suffered a 0-2 series defeat against South Africa.

Manav Suthar and Devdutt Padikkal were the heroes of the victory over Sri Lanka. Padikkal scored 211 runs in the match, including 167 runs in the first innings and 44 runs in the second. Meanwhile, Manav Suthar claimed a 10-wicket haul in the match, including 4 wickets in the first innings and 6 in the second.

This victory earned India 12 crucial points, reviving hopes of reaching the final once again. Following this win, Team India now has 64 points from 10 matches. The team currently remains in fifth place with a points percentage (PCT) of 53.33%.

However, despite the win, India remains in fifth place, partly due to Bangladesh's shocking 9-wicket victory over Australia in Darwin two days ago; neighboring Bangladesh currently sits in fourth place with a PCT of 66.67%.

After the loss to India, Sri Lanka's PCT has dropped to just 33.33%, further diminishing Dhananjaya de Silva's team's chances of reaching the final.

This victory has helped the Indian team regain their lost winning momentum, but the 'Men in Blue' must now ensure they maintain it. To reach the final, the team must win six of the remaining eight matches. Team India will play the second and final Test of the series against Sri Lanka starting August 23 at the SSC, Colombo. Following this, India is scheduled to tour New Zealand later in the year for two Test matches, while next year, the team is set to host Australia for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
