For the Chennai Super Kings—the five-time IPL champions—the rollercoaster ride continues in IPL 2026. The team recently suffered a crushing 8-wicket defeat against the Gujarat Titans, marking their fifth loss of the season. Following this defeat, CSK has slipped to the 6th spot on the points table with just three wins in eight matches, making their path to the playoffs even more arduous. CSK, who once turned their home ground—Chepauk—into an impregnable fortress, have been facing a series of defeats even on their home turf over the last few years. This season marks CSK's second defeat in four matches played at home.

CSK—the team with the most playoff appearances in IPL history—has failed to secure a spot in the playoffs for the past two seasons, and the situation appears to be heading in a similar direction for a third consecutive time. CSK fans are deeply disappointed with the team's performance. Against the Gujarat Titans, the team's batting, bowling, and fielding units all performed dismally. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad scored one of the slowest half-centuries in the history of the IPL. The team's batsmen returned to the pavilion after playing irresponsible shots. The team played 63 dot balls. Following such a performance, it seems likely that CSK will miss out on a playoff spot for the third consecutive season. However, in the IPL, anything is possible. CSK still has a chance to qualify for the playoffs, but to do so, the team must win its upcoming matches consistently.

Generally, winning 8 matches is sufficient to secure a spot in the playoffs. Winning 9 matches significantly increases the chances of finishing in the top two. The Chennai Super Kings have already lost 5 matches so far; from this point onward, even a single defeat could jeopardise their chances of securing a top-tier qualification spot, while losing 2 or 3 matches could effectively extinguish their playoff hopes entirely.

For Ruturaj Gaikwad & co., every match from here is a must-win contest. They will have to win 5 out of 6 games to keep their playoff aspirations alive. This is not the first time the Chennai Super Kings have found themselves in such a predicament. The CSK faced this exact situation during the 2010 IPL as well—a season in which they staged a remarkable comeback from this very position to ultimately clinch the title.

The CSK will have to replicate their 2010 season's tremendous comeback in this season as well. They will have to win at least 5 of 6 matches to keep their playoff hopes alive; otherwise, CSK’s dream of winning the 6th title in this edition will be diminished soon.

Often, teams manage to secure playoff qualification even with just 14 points; however, in such scenarios, they are compelled to rely on the results of other teams. To even reach that position, CSK currently needs to win four more matches. Yet, rather than depending on others, it would be far better for CSK to win five matches and secure a direct spot in the playoffs. If CSK wins all their upcoming matches, then they would qualify as the top 2 as well.

The Chennai Super Kings will play against the Mumbai Indians in their next match on May 2. The CSK team has been undergoing a continuous transition phase for the past few years. However, these young players must now step up and take responsibility; otherwise, CSK's legacy will continue to be tarnished. CSK has a six-day window before their upcoming cricket match against MI, providing them with ample time to formulate their future strategy. The onus will be on the team management to devise a strategy to guide this young squad into the playoffs.
