BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has categorically dismissed speculation about Gautam Gambhir’s future as India’s Test coach, stating that reports suggesting a possible replacement are completely unfounded. In an exclusive conversation with AajTak, the sister channel of India Today, Saikia clarified that there has been no internal discussion or consideration regarding any change to the red-ball coaching structure of the Indian team. Addressing the rumours directly, Saikia emphasized that Gambhir continues to enjoy the full confidence of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and remains firmly in his position as per the terms of his contract. He described the circulating reports as baseless speculation with no truth to them, urging fans and media alike not to read into unverified claims.

Gautam Gambhir set to be removed as India head coach?

Saikia further underlined that the BCCI follows a structured and transparent process when it comes to coaching appointments and reviews, and any major decision would only be taken after thorough evaluation and official communication. At present, however, there is no question of a change, as no such proposal has even been discussed. Gautam Gambhir’s stint as India’s head coach has so far delivered contrasting outcomes across different formats of the game. In white-ball cricket, his impact has been largely positive, with the Indian team enjoying significant success under his leadership. India have claimed major honours in limited-overs cricket, lifting both ICC and ACC trophies, which has reinforced Gambhir’s reputation as an effective strategist in shorter formats. These achievements have drawn praise for his tactical clarity and ability to manage high-pressure tournaments.

However, the same success has not been replicated in Test cricket. India’s red-ball performances have raised concerns, particularly in challenging overseas conditions. The team has suffered 10 Test defeats against SENA nations, exposing inconsistencies in approach and execution. These results have sparked debate among fans and experts about the direction of India’s Test setup and whether adjustments are needed to regain dominance in the longest format.

The scrutiny intensified after India endured a disappointing 2-0 home Test series whitewash against South Africa last month. Following that setback, reports emerged suggesting the BCCI had quietly explored alternative options for the red-ball coaching structure. Speculation grew around VVS Laxman, currently the Head of Cricket at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, with his name frequently mentioned as a potential candidate amid mounting pressure over India’s Test form.

“It’s all rumours. We haven’t discussed or approached anyone. He will continue as per the contract," said BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia.

“The reports currently circulating are entirely inaccurate and purely speculative. Despite being carried by some reputed media outlets, there is no truth to these claims. The BCCI categorically denies them and has taken no such steps. These reports are based on conjecture and imagination, are factually incorrect, and completely baseless," he added.

Looking ahead, India are set to navigate a challenging and potentially defining phase in their red-ball calendar. After battling to a creditable 2-2 draw in the demanding five-Test series in England, the focus will shift to a sequence of overseas and high-profile assignments. The team is scheduled to tour Sri Lanka for a two-Test series in August 2026, a contest that will test adaptability in subcontinental conditions. That will be followed closely by another two-Test series in New Zealand in October, where pace-friendly pitches and swing have historically posed difficulties for Indian sides. These tours will serve as crucial preparation for a blockbuster five-Test home series against Australia in January-February 2027.

Given the rivalry and the stakes involved, this extended run is expected to play a major role in shaping the direction, confidence, and long-term plans of India’s Test team. Meanwhile, in the limited-overs formats, Gautam Gambhir faces an equally significant challenge in the near future. The T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled to begin in February, will see India defending their title on home soil. The tournament is expected to feature a refreshed squad, different from the one that claimed glory in 2024 under Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma, placing fresh responsibility on Gambhir to blend experience with emerging talent.
