England's celebrations following their victory in the first Test match against New Zealand at Lord's had barely concluded when some players once again found themselves embroiled in a nightclub controversy. This incident could now impact the second Test and the future of the England cricket team. According to reports, England captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were at a nightclub late at night, where they were allegedly involved in an incident. Taking the matter seriously, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has launched an investigation into the alleged breach of team protocols by both players. Oversight of the entire matter has been entrusted to the Independent Cricket Regulator.

This controversy will directly impact the ongoing three-match Test series between England and New Zealand. The second match of the series is scheduled to begin on June 17 at the Kennington Oval in London. Currently, the ECB is investigating the matter, and the selection of the squad for the second Test has been put on hold pending the outcome of the inquiry. It remains to be seen whether the board will impose any suspensions or disciplinary action against Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson. If sanctions are indeed imposed on both players, it would be a major setback for England ahead of the second Test match.

According to an official statement from the ECB, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were at a nightclub on Monday morning, after the first Test match against New Zealand, when the incident happened. The board is currently collecting further updates regarding this matter. Even though it's unclear whether any laws were broken, the board is taking a firm stance against breaches of the team curfew and nightclub rules.

"The ECB is currently investigating a breach of team protocols following the conclusion of the first Men's Test against New Zealand. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson were present at a nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning when an incident took place."

"We are currently seeking further information, and an announcement regarding the squad for the second Test will be made in due course. The Cricket Regulator has been informed, and we will provide a further update when possible," the statement added.

In English cricket, late-night disputes are nothing new; in recent years, the board has been plagued by players' off-field conduct. Harry Brook was recently attacked by a Wellington, New Zealand, nightclub bouncer before the Ashes series. He was accompanied at the time by Josh Tongue and Jacob Bethell, which led the board to impose a midnight curfew on the players.

This issue reminds Stokes of terrible memories from the past. After an ODI triumph against the West Indies in 2017, he was detained after a street fight outside Bristol's Mbargo nightclub. That enormous controversy cast uncertainty over Stokes's career, so it is very upsetting for him to have his name linked to a similar incident again.
