A stir arose during the second ODI between India and England when news spread across social media that the third ODI at Lord's would be the final match of Rohit Sharma's international career. Rohit has struggled in both matches played against England so far, managing scores of only 11 and 26 despite significant effort. Having already retired from T20Is and Tests, his retirement from ODIs would mark the end of a magnificent career spanning nearly 19 years. 

After retiring from the other formats, he had focused entirely on ODIs and appeared keen to play in the 2027 World Cup; however, during the England series, selectors informed him that he was not part of the plans for the 2027 World Cup and that the management intended to give Yashasvi Jaiswal an opportunity in the upcoming series. This revelation fueled the rumours of his retirement on social media. 

During the second ODI, after scoring 66 runs and returning to the pavilion, Virat Kohli was seen with Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah; it was likely here that Rohit shared the news of his retirement, leaving Kohli looking visibly emotional.

"He's been on the side for a long time. Won the T20 World Cup but missed out on the 50-over World Cup. He's got the record for the most hundreds in the World Cup. Five of them in the UK in the 2019 edition," said Shastri.
