How can CSK qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs? Check complete qualification scenarios
The IPL 2026 campaign for the five-time champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is gradually getting back on track, and suddenly, hopes for the team reaching the playoffs have been revived. After suffering defeats in their first three matches, CSK has breathed new life into their playoff aspirations by winning five of their subsequent seven fixtures. The team currently stands at 10 points—with 5 wins and 5 losses from 10 matches—and has climbed to the 6th position on the points table. Most recently, they registered their fifth victory of the season by defeating the Delhi Capitals by 7 wickets on the latter's home turf.
Following defeats in the first three matches, the team faced significant criticism. Fans were also persistently demanding the inclusion of MS Dhoni in the Playing XI—a player who, due to a calf injury, has not yet been able to play a single match in IPL 2026. However, CSK's young players have gradually improved their performance and have now successfully steered the team back onto the winning track.
CSK holds the record for the most playoff appearances in IPL history; however, in the last two seasons, the team failed to secure a playoff spot. Nevertheless, this season, CSK could once again reach the playoffs. However, the road ahead is still not easy.
As we know, to confirm a playoff spot, a team generally needs at least 16 points (8 wins), while 18 or 20 points significantly increase the chances of finishing in the top two as well. However, on several occasions, some teams have managed to qualify even with 14 or 12 points; yet, the likelihood of such a scenario arising this season is quite low. The Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are now out of the race to reach the 16-point mark and can accumulate a maximum of only 14 points. However, the top five teams on the points table have already reached 12 points, making the chances of qualifying with a finish of 14 points appear rather slim.
To cement their place in the playoffs, the Ruturaj Gaikwad & side will have to win at least three of their remaining four matches. If the side manages to win all four of their remaining fixtures, they could even finish in the top two. Conversely, if CSK wins only two matches, they will have to rely on the results of other teams. However, this time around, it seems highly unlikely that any team will qualify with just 14 points.
The best-case scenario for CSK would be to win all four of their remaining matches; in such a situation, CSK would not only qualify for the playoffs with 18 points but could also secure a top-two finish. If CSK succeeds in winning three of their next four matches, the team will conclude the league stage with 16 points. Given the current circumstances, multiple teams could potentially finish on 16 points, in which case net-run-rate (NRR) will play a crucial role.
