Now, as the couple prepares to celebrate a decade of togetherness, Geeta has opened up about an important condition she had placed before marrying the former Indian off-spinner. Geeta Basra reveals a secret about her marriage with Harbhajan Singh
It was essential for her to build her own identity before settling down. Respecting her wishes, Harbhajan gave her the space and support she needed, and they eventually tied the knot in 2015. Since then, they have built a beautiful family together and continue to support one another’s dreams and goals. Their love story stands out not just for the glamour attached to it, but also for the mutual respect and understanding that laid its foundation — making it one of the most admired partnerships in Indian celebrity circles.
During a candid conversation with a media portal, Geeta Basra opened up about the early days of her career and how fate brought Harbhajan Singh into her life. She shared that just as she was beginning to gain momentum in Bollywood, she landed a film opposite Emraan Hashmi titled Dil Diya Hai, which hit theatres in 2006. It was a major stepping stone for her, marking her arrival in the industry. The following year, she once again shared screen space with Hashmi in The Train, further cementing her presence in the film world.
Interestingly, the same year Dil Diya Hai released, Harbhajan Singh came across a poster of Geeta promoting the film — and it was an instant connection for him. He was immediately captivated by her presence, and as Geeta puts it, it was love at first sight for the Indian spinner. Despite coming from two different worlds — cricket and cinema — destiny played its part in bringing them together. What began as admiration from afar soon turned into a real connection as the two got to know each other better over time. That single poster kickstarted a love story that would eventually grow into one of the most heartwarming celebrity marriages in India.
“He was very clear. He saw my poster, and it was probably love at first sight for him. He asked Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh) for my number. Obviously, Yuvi has a lot of friends,” stated Geeta Basra.
“They’d just won the World Cup. So a couple of days later, I’d messaged, ‘Well done! Congratulations!’ That’s it. We got in touch again. When we met, he was very clear he didn’t want friendship and said, ‘Tere se hi shaadi karunga’ (I’ll marry only you). I said, ‘Shaadi?’ I was only 21," she added.
Reflecting on her journey in the entertainment industry, Geeta Basra shared that when she first entered Bollywood nearly 15 years ago, it was a very different era for women in films. Opportunities were limited, expectations were rigid, and personal choices were often scrutinised. Despite all of this, Basra was deeply focused on building her career and making her mark in the industry.
However, love had its own plans. Around the same time, she crossed paths with Harbhajan Singh, and the two eventually developed a strong connection. Admitting that she too was smitten by the cricketer, Basra revealed that when their relationship grew serious, she put forth a very specific condition before agreeing to marry him. She made it clear that she would only take the next step once she felt personally and professionally ready, highlighting her clarity, independence, and desire to strike a balance between her career and personal life.
“For him, it was love at first sight. But I took 10 months to say yes. I told him the day you’d score 300 wickets, I’d say yes. A couple of days later, he got 300 wickets. So I said let’s give it a shot," Geeta concluded.
Apart from being involved in some major cricket update, Harbhajan Singh and Geeta Basra tied the knot in 2015 after years of courtship and have since built a beautiful family together. The couple are proud parents to two children—a daughter and a son—and often share glimpses of their family life on social media. Their relationship has stood the test of time, balancing the demands of a high-profile cricket career and a Bollywood journey.
