BCCI introduces match fees for players ahead of IPL 2025

In a historic move, the Board of Control for Cricket of India has introduced match fees in the Indian Premier League. The current BCCI chief secretary, Jay Shah, took to his social media to provide the update ahead of IPL 2025. Shah, who will assume the position of ICC chairman in December, explained that the players in the IPL will be provided match fees for playing in the league. Every player will be eligible for INR 7.5 lakhs per match, which means that if a player is available for every match throughout the season, he will earn 1.05 crores on top of his contract amount with the respective franchise.

The Indian Premier League was launched with a focus on finding and nurturing young talents across the nation. Sixteen seasons in the run, IPL is still carrying forward this aim, with the BCCI now introducing another remarkable provision. With players being eligible for match fees on a per-game basis, the young generation will get the required boost to sustain in the game. As per the rule, each franchise will now allocate a sum of 12.60 crores INR as match fees for the season.

“In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers! A cricketer playing all league matches in a season will get Rs. 1.05 crores in addition to his contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate INR 12.60 crores as match fees for the season! This is a new era for the #IPL and our players,” Jay Shah announced with a tweet on X.

Previously, until IPL 2024, players received the amount they were picked up for in the auction. Moreover, post-match awards like the “Player of the Match” title brought further monetary rewards for individual players. However, now, with the introduction of match fees in the Indian league, every player will surely earn 7.5 lakhs INR on a per-game basis in addition to the central amount that the deal with the franchise was signed for.

The update comes at a time when the 10 IPL franchises await BCCI’s decision on the retention rules for IPL 2025. As per the latest update, the BCCI will announce the retention rules and the Right to Match regulations by Sunday, following the 93rd Annual General Meeting. Moreover, according to reports, each franchise will likely get to retain five of their players ahead of the mega auction.
