After losing their first three matches, Chennai Super Kings have staged a remarkable comeback—winning six of their subsequent eight games—thereby keeping their hopes of reaching the playoffs alive. On the other hand, however, the team has been grappling with a spate of injuries. MS Dhoni has yet to play a single match this season due to a calf injury, while Ayush Mhatre, Khaleel Ahmed and Ramakrishna Ghosh have also been ruled out of the tournament due to injuries.

Now, CSK has suffered another major blow as Jamie Overton has also been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury to his right thigh and has returned home. CSK confirmed this development on their official X handle.

“Jamie Overton has a right thigh injury and will be returning to the UK for further assessment and management.”

This is a major blow for CSK. Jamie Overton has played an important role for the 5-time winners in the IPL 2026 campaign so far, taking 14 wickets and scoring 136 runs in 10 matches. CSK have not specified the duration of Overton's absence or confirmed whether he will miss the remainder of the season, although it remains unlikely that he will return for their final three league matches.

Meanwhile, CSK announced all-rounder Macneil Noronha as the replacement for the injured Ramakrishna Ghosh. He is an all-rounder from Karnataka, and will join CSK for Rs 30 lakh. Noronha was recently awarded the MA Chidambaram Trophy at the Naman awards for being the highest run-getter in the 2024/25 Colonel CK Nayudu Trophy. He scored 1,037 runs in 14 innings with the highest score of 345 and an average of 79.77.

Chennai Super Kings will play their next cricket match against Lucknow Super Giants on May 15. Ahead of the match, CSK management will have to find a replacement for Jamie Overton to make a playing XI. The team also has two overseas bowler options, Spencer Johnson and Nathan Ellis, but neither has played a single match in the ongoing edition.

Chennai Super Kings are currently at No. 5 with 12 points in 11 matches. They will have to win all 3 matches to confirm their playoff spot. They might qualify with 2 more victories, but in this scenario, they will depend on other teams’ results as well. After taking LSG on May 15, CSK will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 18 and Gujarat Titans on May 21 in their last two matches.
