Just days after proudly announcing the purchase of his dream car, Indian fast bowler Akash Deep has reportedly found himself in a bit of trouble. The 28-year-old, who was part of India’s squad for the intense five-match Test series against England, had recently returned home and shared photos on social media flaunting his new Toyota Fortuner — a popular SUV choice among cricketers. However, according to a recent report, the celebrations have hit a roadblock. The Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has reportedly issued a notice to the Bengal pacer for allegedly using the vehicle without a High Security Registration Plate (HSRP), which is mandatory under Indian motor vehicle laws.

Vehicles without HSRP can be fined or even impounded, as the plates are designed to prevent theft and ensure proper registration tracking. The Fortuner, known for its rugged performance and luxury features, is a status symbol for many, and Akash Deep was clearly excited about the new addition to his garage. But this incident serves as a reminder that compliance with transport regulations is just as important. The bowler has yet to issue a public statement, and it remains to be seen how the matter will be resolved with the concerned authorities.

Unlike standard number plates, which can be easily damaged or tampered with, High Security Registration Plates were introduced by the Government of India to enhance vehicle security and ensure better durability. Designed to withstand greater wear and tear, HSRPs are now mandatory for all vehicles across the country. These specialized plates come equipped with multiple security features that make them far more secure than traditional ones. They include a unique laser-etched code, a tamper-proof hologram, and are affixed using non-removable snap-lock screws, making them difficult to forge or steal.

These measures help in curbing vehicle thefts and aid law enforcement agencies in tracking and verifying vehicle details more efficiently. By ensuring every registered vehicle uses a standardized, tamper-resistant plate, the government aims to improve road safety, curb cloning of number plates, and streamline vehicle identification across states. Non-compliance with HSRP regulations can lead to penalties or other legal action. According to a report, Indian cricketer Akash Deep landed in trouble after his newly purchased black Toyota Fortuner was found without a High Security Registration Plate. As a result, the Dehri-born pacer was issued a notice by the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department for non-compliance with vehicle registration norms.

The issue has also led to action against M/s Sunny Motors, the dealership from which Deep bought the SUV. The dealer has reportedly delivered the vehicle without completing the mandatory registration process or installing the HSRP, which is now a legal requirement across India.

In response, the authorities have suspended the dealership’s operations for one month and have demanded an explanation. The company has been given 14 days to respond to the notice and justify its actions. The incident has sparked discussions on the importance of adhering to road and vehicle safety regulations, even for high-profile buyers.
