Gautam Gambhir became India's head coach after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Every Indian cricket fan expected India to reach new heights under his guidance. He had led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, which made him the popular choice for the next Indian coach. However, the Indian team's performance during his tenure so far has been underwhelming.

Under his coaching, India has won the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title, the Asia Cup 2025 title, and a historical test series draw in England. India has also not lost any T20I series so far and remains undefeated. But in Tests and ODIs, India suffered a couple of setbacks.

His coaching tenure started in August 2024, when India visited Sri Lanka for a 3-match T20I & 3-match ODI series. India won the T20I series easily, but India shockingly lost the series 0-2. Following this, India defeated lower side test nation, Bangladesh, by 2-0, in a 2-match test home series. But in the very next cricket series of red ball against New Zealand, the Indian team lost at home by 0-3. After this, India went to Australia to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India lost by 1-3. After these defeats, India was unable to confirm their spots in the ICC World Test Championship 2025 finals for the first time in history.

In 2025, India's test side successfully drew the 5-match test series against England. Then, India also won the test series by 2-0 against the West Indies, but then, India faced a 0-2 test series defeat against South Africa in home conditions.

In ODIs, India toured Australia for a 3-match ODI series, which was concluded with a 1-2 loss. Following this, India hosted South Africa in a 3-match ODI series, in which India won the series 2-1. But once again, against New Zealand, India suffered a series loss. India's T20I side dominance continues, and they won the series against the Aussies by 2-1(5) and against South Africa by 3-1(5).
