The opening match of the BBL 2026/27 season, featuring the Melbourne Renegades and the Perth Scorchers, is set to take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on December 12, 2026. Cricket Australia confirmed the news on its official social media handle, 'X', stating,

"Cricket Australia has confirmed Melbourne Renegades will play Perth Scorchers in India this December in what the league anticipates will be the most-watched game in Big Bash history."

Reports regarding this had been circulating for a long while, and Cricket Australia officially confirmed it on July 10. The passion for cricket in India far exceeds that in other nations, and Cricket Australia has taken this step to expand its league.

This historic decision comes while Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Australia, with a focus on elevating strategic, economic, and sporting ties between the two nations to new heights. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced this piece of news on Friday with his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi next to him. Meanwhile, the announcement to host the Big Bash League (BBL) opener at Chennai's Chepauk Stadium is viewed as a significant move in India-Australia sports cooperation.

This will be the first occasion when a Big Bash League match will be held outside Australia. Previously, both teams had toured each other's country several times. The last time fans witnessed an India vs Australia match was last year, when India’s men's team toured Australia for the white-ball bilateral series. However, the women's cricket teams had faced each other just last month during the Women's T20 World Cup 2026. Australia’s men's side will tour India for the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2027.

The executive general manager of the BBL, Alistair Dobson, stated that taking the competition overseas was aimed at introducing the BBL to new audiences.

“We'd also love to see BBL fans from around India travelling into Chennai to the game," he said.

"We want to fill the stadium, and we want it to be a true BBL experience with lots of people and colour and noise and music and great cricket. We think it'll be pretty historic," he added
